An Updated Updated Skincare Routine

So, if you’ve been following along my most recent posts, you’d know that I recently posted my Sunday night self care routine. In that post, I linked my skincare routine: however, in looking back at that, I realized that I actually changed it around a fair bit, and my skin is really thanking me. At the time I wrote that post, I was experiencing the worst acne outbreak I had ever had in my life, including a ton of super fun cystic acne.

After looking back at that post, I looked at some pictures from that time (aka like 2 months ago) and… wow, has my skin ever changed. I started being a little more extra with my skincare, which ties in with my whole new “actually take care of urself dammit” mantra (but if you think I will EVER eat a meal that doesn’t consist explicitly of pasta and/or avocado toast, you’re wrong.)

So BASICALLY here’s what I’ve been doing that’s ACTUALLY been working.

I mentioned a while ago that I bought this L’Oreal clay cleanser because I thought it was a mask and I’m dumb as hell. WELL my roommate pointed out to me that it’s all natural and stuff, which is great, except there was really no medicinal ingredients, such as salicylic acid, that could help me clear up my suddenly problematic skin. SO I did what any rational person would do when faced with this dilemma: I kept using it because I spent money on it. It’s brightening and energizing, which is perfect to wake up my tired skin. I always always always follow up with my regular, OG, tried and true, Clean and Clear moisturizer. I’ve used this product for years and I will never give her up. Who needs boys when you have a killer moisturizer?

Now this… this is where we really get our skincare on.

I start by taking off my makeup. I love these makeup wipes by Neutrogena (Hint: literally everyone and their mother uses these) but lately I’ve been just using coconut oil and taking off my makeup with a tissue – It’s awesome and cost effective, cause you KNOW I use coconut oil for pretty much everything, so I always have some kickin around.

Then I actually wash my face – I went back to my regular Clean and Clear face wash at night, because it actually has medicinal ingredients to fight acne should I get more flare ups. I usually use a wash cloth to wipe it off, so I get a little exfoliating action in there too.

I follow up with the same clean and clear moisturizer, but this time I add some coconut oil around my eyes, on any super dry patches, and in my lashes and brows to condition them, since I put them through so much hell (aka so much product) on a daily basis.

Finally, I address any skin problems I might be having. If I have a lot of super dry patches I’ll dermaplane them real quick, which happens now that it’s winter and I live in Canada and it’s -538792 degrees all the time, but I’ll do this before I moisturize. If I’m having a breakout, I hit it with a little spot treatment.

One thing I’ve been really trying to do more of lately is drinking more water, and I know everyone says it, but YO, if you’re not hydrated then literally everything starts falling apart – grades, finances, physical health, and, most importantly, your skin. Maybe people know what they’re talking about after all????

It’s so important not to skip out on skincare. No matter how tired I am at the end of the day, I make sure to AT LEAST take my makeup off and moisturize, because my skin will be PISSED in the morning if I don’t.

I also mentioned in this post a vitamin that you can get to help your skin, hair, and nails, called biotin. Most people know the supplement as Sugar Bear Hair, and they’re endorsed by the Kardashians! I’m a broke af student so I get mine from a regular drugstore vitamin brand. I’ve almost finished my bottle (which is the gummy kind, so you KNOW I’ve been eating them up, and there’s 100 in there so I’ve been at it for a while) and I genuinely think it’s really helping my skin!

There you have it, loves! an updated skincare routine that’s actually been working for my problematic and confusing skin.

What’s the one skincare product you can’t live without? I’d love to try some new stuff out!
